Donor HIGHLIGHT

Carol Herzog first explored writing 10-minute plays in 1985 when she founded the Mid America Playwrights in Springfield with a group of local artists. The group met for years, refining their works and performing their plays at “On Broadway,” a now-closed venue that once hosted musicians and artists.
Now living in Texas, Herzog recently returned to Springfield to see the impact of a donation she made to the University of Illinois Springfield’s Performing Arts Center, that provides new opportunities for playwrights. Herzog sponsored one of this season’s Date Night productions, Date Night with 10-Minute Plays, held at the UIS Studio Theatre in January. The event featured readings of six 10-minute plays by local artists, much like her own early experiences.
“When you see what you wrote go from the page to the stage, you just can’t believe it,” she said. “It’s an experience not many people get. But when you hear it, see it, and watch the crowd—it’s incredibly fulfilling.”
A longtime supporter of Springfield’s arts scene, Herzog earned her master’s degree in Community Arts Management from UIS in 1996. Even after moving to Texas in 2020, following a decade in the Southwest, Herzog has remained involved. She was recently talking with a contact on campus about diversifying her charitable giving when she learned of the planned performance, organized by UIS Performing Arts Center’s 2024 Our Stage/Our Voices Artist-in-Residence Tim Crawford, whom she has followed since his production of Outraged!
“I think my face jumped off my face, so to speak, when she told me about it,” Herzog said “I told her you don’t even need to explain it to me. It just sounds like the right thing. I’m just doing it!’
