Adult Learning Opportunities

The UIS Performing Arts Center occasionally offers adult learning opportunities in the performing arts.

Writing Workshop ImageIn October 2024, the UIS Performing Arts Center is pleased to offer Writing for the Stage, a FREE four-session workshop course on writing short plays. This workshop course will focus on getting to know the basics of playwriting. We’ll cover what you need to know to get started, how to develop an idea into a play, and how to avoid pitfalls as you complete your own short play. We will also explore how to get your work performed and how to get around some of the barriers that keep us from getting our unique voices up on stage.

At the end of the workshop series, participants who have completed the writing of a ten-minute play will have the opportunity to submit their play to be considered for inclusion in a staged reading evening of ten-minute plays to take place in the UIS Studio Theatre in January 2025.

Workshop participants must be 18 years of age or older.  The course is free to participants, but space is limited and registration is required.  Register here

The workshops will be held at UIS Performing Arts Center, 1 University Plaza, Springfield IL on Level 1 in PAC 155 near the UIS Studio Theatre, on the following dates and times:

Tuesday, October 8, 5:30-7:30 pm
Tuesday, October 15, 5:30-7:30 pm
Tuesday, October 22, 5:30-7:30 pm
Tuesday, October 29, 5:30-7:30 pm

We understand that not all participants will be able to attend all workshop sessions.  That’s okay.  But we hope you can make it to as many of these dates as your schedule will allow.

The course was developed and will be led by the 2023-2024 Our Stage / Our Voices Artist-in-Residence Tim Crawford.

The registration link can be found here.  Do not hesitate to reach out to Carly Shank, Local Arts and Arts Education Program Director, at 217-206-8286, carmi1@uis.edu if you have any questions or have any difficulty filling out the form.
